The inclusion of broccoli and cabbage on the menu can help to lower blood pressure. This is because they are high in glutamic acid. Glutamic acid is the most common amino acid and is responsible for almost a quarter of vegetable protein and almost one-fifth of animal protein.

Other sources include whole grains such as rice, bread and snacks, soy products (tofu), durum wheat used for pasta production.

For the study researchers analyzed the amount of five amino acids - the building blocks of protein in the diets of people from USA, UK, China and Japan. Survey of 4680 people aged between 40 and 59 years shows that the more people consume protein, so prices fall their blood.

Dr Ian Brown, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London, said:

Glutamic acid may explain to some extent the relationship between vegetable protein and lower blood pressure. But it is not a magic wand that can prevent high blood pressure, and vegetable protein and glutamic acid are simply elements of a healthy diet.

The study is published in the Journal of the American Association for cardiovascular disease.
